Powering up energy partnership between ERAV and AER in Vietnam

On 6 April, Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) arranged an energy roundtable discussion between the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).
Held in ERAV’s offices in Hanoi, the meeting was attended by ERAV staff and representatives from the Australian Embassy and P4I, with other attendees joining online.
Opening remarks were delivered by Mr Pham Quang Huy, Deputy Director General of ERAV, Benjamin Davis from the Australian Embassy, and virtually by Mark Feather from AER.
The meeting was held to strengthen the existing relationship between ERAV and AER, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2017. It was also an opportunity to facilitate knowledge-sharing on developments in the energy sector and explore potential opportunities for exchanging technical assistance and training, and support through P4I.
The meeting began with ERAV providing an overview of Vietnam’s power system and market, along with priorities, challenges and opportunities. AER then outlined Australia’s experience in electricity market reform, with a presentation on the country’s transition to retail market electricity competition, including structure, operations and trends. Australia’s experience in the regulation of transmission and distribution segments was also discussed, with lessons learned and implications for Vietnam.
Bilateral energy cooperation between Australia and Vietnam is focused on providing a stable, secure and sustainable energy market in Vietnam. The meeting concluded with discussions on future areas of ERAV cooperation with AER through P4I.
